On This Day In Canadian History....

1806 - Philemon Wright starts first raft of pine and oak staves down the Ottawa River; reaches Quebec two months later; opens up new timber trade in the Valley, with huge rafts of squared white pine being floated down to Quebec, where they are broken up and loaded into ships bound for Britain.

good morning mr red - i wonder if u posted a reply to my post yesterday. I never did get back on the blog - my father & much-younger-second-wife arrived from out of town for an overnighter - he's trying out his new garmin 1205 GPS - which even allows him to map a route in iceland !! why he needs all the features beats me but it was a steal at CT he says.

@ Devil

The Garmin is among the best GPS's out on the market today, along with TomTom. The advantage that this Dutch company has is that they were, if not the first, then among the very first private companies to seek out and exploit the advantages and marketability of GPS from a military product to a consumer product.

Most GPS come with complete maps of North America, I dunno about Iceland, but I'm guessing it'd be a very long, cold,& wet drive in my Honda.....although when I take the ferry between Buckingham and Cumberland it does tend to slow me down. The GPS reads the speed of the Ferry (approx 11km/h) and re-adjusts my arrival time to my destination by several hours, until I get back on land and up to hwy speed. :-)

@DeVil - I usually wait until evening when I have finished all my chores to get into the pool. Although I may be tempted today after a few hours weeding to take an early dip.

.....plus the more you pay the better the features you get in return.

Most GPS use 3 satellites to pin-point your location, within up to 90 metres. But you can pay more and use more satellites to locate your vehicle within 3 mteres, which enables the GPS to tell which lane you are in on a multi-lane hwy and tell you which lane you should be in to take the appropriate turn-off....great feature in Montreal, Toronto or other major metropolitan city in North America.

Also as on option on some and standard with the more expensive GPS, traffic reports via text on your GPS (with voice alerts) and/or via a FM signal from the GPS to your in-dash stereo or mp3/iPod w/FM signal

@ mr red
well, that's a lot of GPS info & i don't even have one! :) yet, i'm tempted, esp when I mapquest a backroad route to some obscure place like Carleton Place and get totally lost in the boonies ... I even recently got lost in Westboro, trying to avoid wellington/richmond during rushhour!

@ pharmerphil

we're installing the last dock piece today, so technically I can start the 2010 swim season with the "get in, get-out quick before you die" early season types of "swims." It's a lot windier 80ft out than at the shoreline.

How are the kittens doing? I can just imagine them looking up at you with sad eyes and saying,
"Why, master, why?!"

I think you should buy them a year's supply of catnip to make it up to them! :-)

Angel said...

@Mr. E. :-)

lol! I brought them to get fixed at 7:30am on Friday and picked them up at 2:30pm. When they got home they started running around like nothing had happened!!! They didn't even sleep till after 9pm. I couldn't believe it!!! It only slowed them down a little bit. Pretty tough cookies!
