1891 - James Naismith, a YMCA trainer from Almonte, Ontario, nails two peach buckets up on opposite ends of the Springfield College gym and instructs his students to toss soccer balls into them, thus inventing the game of basketball. He had been looking for a new indoor phys-ed activity for the winter season.

1940 - Ottawa Rough Riders beat Toronto Balmy Beach 8-2 in first of two game total points Grey Cup competition; Ottawa wins second game and 28th Grey Cup 12-5; the only two-game series ever played.

1969 - Russ Jackson throws record four touchdowns as the Ottawa Rough Riders beat Saskatchewan Roughriders 29-11 in 57th CFL Grey Cup game.

1976 - Ottawa Roughriders beat Saskatchewan Rough Riders 23-20 to win 64th Grey Cup game. With 20 seconds remaining, down by 4 points, Ottawa quarterback Tom Clements waves off a play from the bench and had receiver Tony Gabriel to fake a post route and then head for the end zone. Gabriel pulled in the Clements pass to cap an amazing game-winning play to win the Grey Cup.
