1834 - Ludger Duvernay hosts founding banquet as President of the of St-Jean-Baptiste Society; the maple leaf is chosen as the emblem of the association, and 'Nos institutions, notre langue nos droits' the motto. At the close of the evening, the gathering rise to sing a patriotic song, 'O Canada, mon pays, mes amours,' composed for the occasion by a 20 year old lawyer, former rebel and Secretary of the Society, George-Etienne Cartier.

1976 - House of Commons votes to abolish the death penalty with a six-vote majority. The last two people executed in Canada were Ronald Turpin and Arthur Lucas, convicted in separate murders, at 12:02 am on December 11, 1962 at the Don Jail in Toronto.

1942 - Japanese submarine I-26, under the command of Yokota Minoru, fired 25-30 rounds of 5.5" shells at the Estevan Point lighthouse on Vancouver Island, but failed to hit its target.This marked the first enemy shelling of Canadian soil since the War of 1812; no casualties were reported
