The Earl of Egmont had asked George III to grant him Prince Edward Island forever; he planned to build armed castles and moats for himself and about 400 lesser lords.

1948 - Newfoundland votes to join Canada; second Newfoundland referendum in less than two months gives narrow 7,000 majority for union with Canada.
