1835 - Jury acquits Joseph Howe of seditious libel, after he published an anonymous letter in his newspaper, The NovaScotian, on January 1, accusing Halifax magistrates and police of pocketing £30,000 in public funds over a 30-year period; acting as his own lawyer, Howe gave a 6 hour speech, citing case after case of civic corruption, and urged the jurors "to leave an unshackled press as a legacy to your children"; the jury called his remarks "fair comment".
