1961 - Connie-Gail Feller dethroned after less than 6 weeks as Miss Canada because she returned home for a religious holiday without permission from officials; Feller, the first Ottawan to wear the crown, replaced by runner-up Miss Victoria.

1908 - Montreal sports promoters George Kennedy and Dr. Joseph-Pierre Gadbois incorporate the Club Athlétique Canadien (CAC), founded in 1905; the club has mostly French-speaking shareholders; it invests in wrestling, hockey, baseball, lacrosse, and other sports; in 1910 the club’s share capital increased from $25,000 to $100,000, with some 116 shareholders; the founding corporation of the Montreal Canadiens.

1826 - Colonel John By starts to build Rideau Canal with Thomas MacKay contracting; majority of the actual work was done by thousands of Irish and French-Canadian labourers; it took a total of 6 years to complete, by 1832.

1917 - Parliament passes new tax on income as a 'temporary measure' to help pay for the war effort and post war recovery. The rate for individuals is 4%, with an additional 2% on incomes between $6,000 and $10,000; the rate for corporations 4% on incomes over $3,000.

1969 - Federal Government to reorganize Canadian Armed Forces; 50% cut in NATO manpower; retirement of aircraft carrier HMCS Bonaventure. She served in the Royal Canadian Navy and Canadian Forces Maritime Command from 1957 to 1970 and was the last aircraft carrier to serve Canada.
Editorial Note: My late uncle, Bernie Dubois, served aboard the HMCS Bonaventure for many years, until it's decommission.
