1944 - HMCS Regina torpedoed and sunk by German U-boat, U-667, off Trevose Head, Cornwall, England. The Regina sank in 28 seconds, 30 of the ship's crew were killed

On This Day In Canadian History....
1940 - Montreal Mayor Camilien Houde arrested by RCMP for sedition; because of his fascist sympathies he was sent to internment camp for the rest of World War II under the War Measures Act. Upon his release on 18 August 1944, he was greeted by a cheering crowd of 50,000 Montrealers, and won back his job as Montreal mayor in 1944's civic election.
