On This Day In Canadian History.... 1942 - A Japanese submarine shells isolated Estevan Point on Vancouver Island, with little damage; only time Canadian land territory under fire in World War II, there were submarine attacks inside Canada's territorial waters, notably the sinking by the German U-Boat U-517 of HMCS Charlottetown Sept. 11, 1942, 6 nautical miles (11 km) off Cap Chat in the St. Lawrence River along the northern shore of the Gaspé Peninsula.
