1962 - Prime Minister John Diefenbaker officially opens the Trans-Canada Highway to traffic, eliminating the final 160 km of dusty, gravel road from Golden to Revelstoke. Running almost 9000 km, from St. John's, Newfoundland to Victoria BC, the Trans Canada is the longest national highway in the world; construction began in 1950.
