1892 - Former Governor General Lord Stanley announces he will donate a silver challenge cup, later named after him, as an award for the best hockey team in Canada; originally presented to amateur champions; awarded to the top pro team since 1910, and since 1926, only by NHL teams.

1746 - Sir Charles Knowles, 1st Baronet, appointed Governor of Cape Breton Island. He spent nearly two years as governor, complaining about the "confused, dirty, beastly condition" of the Fortress of Louisbourg and was largely engaged in repairing and improving the defences of the captured French fortress.
