1873 - Northwest Mounted Police established by Sir John A MacDonald; given the Royal prefix by King Edward VII in 1904 to become the Royal Northwest Mounted Police. Later merges with the Dominion Police in 1920 to become Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP)

1800 - Feeling the strain of overpopulation in his hometown of Woburn, Massachusetts, Philemon Wright led a group of 5 families and 33 labourers to the then isolated and unsettled area of the Ottawa Valley. He came upon the intersection of the Gatineau and Ottawa rivers and found good soil there; founds Wrightstown, later known as Hull and now, Gatineau

On This Day In Canadian History....

1617 - Louis Hébert signs agreement to become the first colonist of New France; he is a farmer and apothecary, and will provide herbal medicines to the inhabitants. With his wife, Marie Rollet, and their three children, Guillaume (3 years old), Guillaumette (9 years old), and Anne (14 years old), he left Paris to live in Quebec City. He died there 10 years later because of an injury that occurred when he fell on a patch of ice.
