With 20 seconds remaining, down by 4 points, Ottawa quarterback Tom Clements waves off a play from the bench and had receiver Tony Gabriel to fake a post route and then head for the end zone. 1944 - Royal Canadian Navy Flower Class corvette HMCS Shawinigan torpedoed and sunk before dawn by German submarine U-1228. Shawinigan was on anti-submarine patrol in the Cabot Strait, waiting to meet up the ferry SS Burgeo, in order to shepherd her to Sydney, Nova Scotia; all 91 hands are lost; the explosion woke residents ten miles away in Grand Bay, Newfoundland.

On This Day In Canadian History.... 1905 - William Mackenzie & Donald Mann complete the Canadian Northern Railway to Edmonton, as Alberta Lieutenant Governor George Bulyea drives home a silver spike at 2:15 pm. Mackenzie & Mann's northern transcontinental will eventually run from Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Edmonton to Vancouver, but the effort bankrupts the pair, and in 1917 the CNoR becomes a part of the Canadian National Railways.
