1900 - Berliner Gramophone Co. of Montreal registers the famous dog and gramophone symbol, His Master's Voice as the company's Canadian trademark. Three of the four major global record companies have units which can trace their ancestry to Berliner Gramophone, Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and EMI.

1783 - First of 7,000 United Empire Loyalists reach Parrtown at the mouth of the St. John River to found a settlement. Two years later, on this date, Parrtown is incorporated and renamed Saint John; first city incorporated in Canada.

1963 - Canadian Army engineer Sergeant-Major Walter Leja is seriously injured when bomb he is trying to dismantle blows up in his hands; one of a series of six FLQ terrorist bombs that explode in Westmount mailboxes starting at 3 am (five more are disarmed, another 5 are carried away and blown up safely). Three days later, police arrest 20 members of the Front de liberation Quebecois; 21 year old Mario Bachand will be sentenced to four years in jail for planting bombs.

1871 - Imperial Order-in-Council lets British Columbia join the Dominion as Canada's sixth province.

1956 - A Royal Canadian Air Force CF-100 fighter jet crashes into the Grey Nuns' Home for the Aged in the Ottawa suburb of Orleans, killing 15 people, including 11 nuns.

At 10:37 p.m. two CF-100s were launched from their base at RCAF Station Uplands (located south of Ottawa) to identify an unknown aircraft heading towards Montréal. The plane was identified as a RCAF North Star flying from Resolute Bay to Dorval Airport. The two planes climbed to 33,000 feet to practice interception techniques and burn off excess fuel before returning to base.

One of the aircraft returned to base, but the other remained airborne longer to burn off more excess fuel. However, something malfunctioned on the plane. One story is that the oxygen masks of the two crewmen malfunctioned and the men lost consciousness, though the cause has never been officially determined. The plane descended at a speed of nearly 680mph and crashed into the Villa St. Louis.

1793 - Alexander Mackenzie leaves Fort York at the forks of the Peace and Smoky rivers; heads west towards Pacific with party of nine, eventually reaching the Pacific Ocean via the Bella Coola River, becoming the first European to cross North America using a route north of Mexico.

1813 - General Zebulon Pike departs from York (Toronto) to Fort Niagara after burning the Parliament Buildings, looting the town; occupied since Apr 27.; British retaliate a year later by burning the American capital, Washington.

1789 - Estaban Jose Martinez arrives in Nootka Sound (of what is now British Columbia) on Spanish warship Princesa; proclaims Spanish sovereignty on west coast.

1536 - Jacques Cartier discovers threat of Iroquois rebellion; captures Chief Donnacona as hostage during a religious ceremony; promises to bring him back from France in ten moons.

1497 - John and Sebastian Cabot, Italian-born navigators, set sail to follow Columbus' route to what he thought was Asia; Cabot's expedition reaches land June 24th, likely at Cape Breton, then sails east along the south coast of Newfoundland.

1660 - Adam Dollard des Ormeaux with 16 compatriots and 44 Huron allies, intending to ambush the Iroquois, instead meets a war party of 300 Onondagas, and has to retreat into an abandoned Algonkian fort by the Long Sault Rapids on the Ottawa River; some French panic and fire on the Iroquois, leading to the desertion of Huron chief Annaotaha. When a powder cask blows up, the Iroquois attack.
