On This Day In Canadian History....

1916 - Emily Murphy of Edmonton appointed first woman magistrate in Canada and the British Empire. She is best known for her contributions to Canadian feminism, specifically to the question of whether women were "persons" under Canadian law. In October 2009, the Senate voted to name Murphy, Canada's first "honorary senator"
