I actually decided to splurge and buy a Magellan GPS from Canadian Tire yesterday (supposedly half price according to the latest flyer).
What a neat tool! I tried it out heading to Lone Star yesterday and it saved a lot of headache right off the bat. However, if it didn't speak to you, advising you on the fly of what turns to take, it wouldn't be so useful (the screen is quite small). Plus, I do not have a feasible way to mount it in my car (supposedly you can't legally mount it on the windshield or on the dashboard's top [or am I wrong?]. That sucks big time.
