1855 - Sir George-Etienne Cartier, co-premier of the United Province of Canada with John A. Macdonald, passes his Militia Act, constitutes all males between the ages of 18 and 60 as military forces of Canada; all men under 40 to be mustered once a year; Governor-General to be the Commander in Chief of the militia.
