1980 - Ottawa gives financially strapped Chrysler Canada $20 million in loan guarantees, and Ontario provides a $10 million grant; the US also provided $1.5 billion in loans and subsidies to bail out Chrysler Corp, the parent company. Under the leadership of Lee Iacocca, the company will return to health and pay back the loans.

1868 - Patrick J. Whelan, a tailor and alleged Fenian sympathizer, was arrested and charged with the assassination of Canadian journalist and politician Thomas D'Arcy McGee, to date, the only Canadian victim of political assassination at the federal level. Decades after Whelan died on the gallows, his guilt was questioned, and some claim that he was scapegoated for the murder.

1972 - Birth of the Québec Nordiques of the World Hockey Association (WHA). The franchise was originally awarded to a group in San Francisco, as the San Francisco Sharks, but when financing fell through, it was sold to a group of six owners of the Quebec Remparts junior team. The team's first head coach was Maurice "Rocket" Richard but he decided coaching wasn't his forte and stepped down after two games.

'Carbide' Willson develops first manufacturing process to create acetylene gas; already developed on a laboratory scale; sells process to Union Carbide; builds a calcium carbide plant on Victoria Island in the Ottawa River in 1896, a mansion in Ottawa with a lab in the basement, and a summer home and hydro dam on Meech Lake.

1915 - Lt.-Col. John McCrae of Guelph, Ontario composes his poem 'In Flanders Fields' in 20 minutes, while overlooking the grave of a fellow officer at Ypres, Belgium; first published in Dec. 1915 in Punch magazine, his elegy is the most famous English poem written during World War I

1670 - Charles II grants a Royal charter to his cousin Price Rupert and a group of investors called The Governor and Company of Adventurers of England trading into Hudson's Bay: today's Hudson's Bay Company. Two French explorers and traders, Pierre-Esprit Radisson and Médard Chouart des Groseilliers, proposed the fur-trading company to the group, and mounted a successful season of trade a year earlier. The charter gives the company the exclusive monopoly of commerce in lands flowing into Hudson Bay, and charges them to find a route to the South Seas.

1986 - Queen's University offensive tackle Mike Schad chosen by Los Angeles Rams, to become the first Canadian football player ever selected in the first round of the NFL draft. He is the only player in CIS football history to be selected in the first round of an NFL Draft. He would go on to play a total of 62 games with the Rams and the Philadelphia Eagles.
