On This Day In Canadian History....
1920 - Radio station XWA of Montreal, Quebec, broadcasts the first regularly scheduled radio programming in North America. Call letters changed to CINW on December 14, 1999. Corus Entertainment announced on January 29, 2010, that CINW would cease broadcasting as of 7:00pm local time that day, due to unsustainable ratings. Regular programming ceased at 10:00am and was replaced with a loop of an announcement of the closure of the station from general manager Mark Dickie. At 7:02pm eastern time, after 90 years on the air, broadcasting abruptly ceased.

1940 – Princess Juliana and Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands flee the Nazi invasion of the Netherlands. They arrive in Ottawa, and reside in Stornoway in Rockcliffe as a guest of the Canadian government. When her third child Margriet was born, the Governor General, Alexander Cambridge, granted Royal Assent to a special law declaring Princess Juliana's rooms at the Ottawa Civic Hospital as extraterritorial so that the infant would have exclusively Dutch citizenship.

1870 - Canada's agent in London. Sir John Rose, delivers a bank draft for £300,000 (the equivalent of $11 million) to the Hudson's Bay Company in full payment for the title to Rupert's Land. The land includes all territories drained by rivers flowing into Hudson Bay (most of today's Prairie provinces, northern Ontario, northwestern Quebec and portions of the Northwest Territories.) The HBC keeps blocks of land around its trading posts and 1/20 of the fertile belt (2.8 million hectares).

1946 - Mackenzie King government declines to act on a recommendation from a joint committee of the Senate and House of Commons regarding the committee's choice of a new Canadian national flag; 2,695 designs had been submitted and the committee chose "the Canadian red ensign with a maple leaf in autumn golden colours in a bordered background of white". However, the Legislative Assembly of Quebec had urged the committee not to include any "foreign symbols", including the red ensign or union jack.
