On This Day In Canadian History....

1870 - Canada's agent in London, Sir John Rose, delivers a bank draft for £300,000 (the equivalent of $11 million) to the Hudson's Bay Company in full payment for the title to Rupert's Land. The land includes all territories drained by rivers flowing into Hudson Bay (most of today's Prairie provinces, northern Ontario, northwestern Quebec and portions of the Northwest Territories.) The HBC keeps blocks of land around its trading posts and 1/20 of the fertile belt (2.8 million hectares).

1980 - Ottawa gives financially strapped Chrysler Canada $20 million in loan guarantees, and Ontario provides a $10 million grant; the US also provided $1.5 billion in loans and subsidies to bail out Chrysler Corp, the parent company. 1868 - Patrick J. Whelan, a tailor and alleged Fenian sympathizer, was arrested and charged with the assassination of Canadian journalist and politician Thomas D'Arcy McGee, to date, the only Canadian victim of political assassination at the federal level. Decades after Whelan died on the gallows, his guilt was questioned, and some claim that he was scapegoated for the murder.

On This Day In Canadian History....

1900 - A defective chimney on a house in Hull caught fire, which quickly spread between the wooden houses due to windy conditions. Two thirds of Hull was destroyed, including 40 per cent of its residential buildings and most of its largest employers along the waterfront. The fire also spread across the wooden Chaudière Bridge and destroyed a large swath of western Ottawa from the LeBreton Flats south to Dow's Lake. About one fifth of Ottawa was destroyed with almost everything in the band between Booth Street and the rail line leveled; known now as The Great Hull Fire of 1900; $10 million in losses.

1950 - British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Prince Edward Island sign an agreement with Ottawa to build the Trans-Canada Highway. By the time it is completed in 1971, it will be the 3rd longest national highway in the world, after the Trans-Siberian Highway and Australia's Highway 1, with the main route spanning 7,821 km (4,860 miles).
