1916 - Emily Murphy of Edmonton appointed first woman magistrate in Canada and the British Empire. She is best known for her contributions to Canadian feminism, specifically to the question of whether women were "persons" under Canadian law. In October 2009, the Senate voted to name Murphy, Canada's first "honorary senator"

1758 - French and Indian War - After a week of fog lifts at dawn, Gen Jeffrey Amherst gives James Wolfe the order to attack Louisbourg. After a near disastrous landing, Wolfe leads the light infantry, rangers, Fraser's Highlanders, and the grenadiers of the first, fifteenth, seventeenth, and twenty-second regiments onto the shore west of the fortress; establishes a beachhead, driving 1,200 French defenders into the town; the British then proceed to land artillery to train on the French stronghold, which will surrender seven weeks later

1944 - D-Day: 14,000 Canadian troops landed at Juno Beach, they faced some of the fiercest opposition of the attack, yet they managed to advance further inland than all the other Allied forces, combined. RCN minesweepers help clear the lanes in, and RCAF bombers and fighters help soften up the German defenses while the Canadian Army pushes through the gap between Bayeux and Caen. Canadian casualties that day are less than expected, but still heavy - 715 wounded, 359 dead.

1811 - Lord Selkirk is granted over 70 million acres along the Red River and Assiniboine River in present-day Manitoba and North Dakota by the Hudson's Bay Company. Selkirk pays 10 shillings for the land, which he calls Assiniboia, and agrees to supply 200 able-bodied men each year for 10 years. The Red River settlers will struggle with natural disasters and against the Métis population until 1836, when Assiniboia again comes under HBC control.
