1944 - RCN convoy escorts HMCS St. Thomas, HMCS Edmunston, and HMCS Sea Cliff detect a submarine north-west of the Azores 1,000 kilometres off the coast of Newfoundland. St. Thomas attacks U-877 with a Squid forward-throwing anti-submarine mortar; after losing contact, St. Thomas is heading home when the damaged U-boat surfaces about four kilometres away; Capt. Stanislav Dury shouts "Ne tirez pas," or "Don't shoot" as his crew prepares to fire; instead, they proceeded to rescue 56 German survivors; the submarine sinks shortly after.
