On This Day In Canadian History....

1885 - General Frederick Dobson Middleton leaves for the west in command of 5,000 troops to fight the North West Rebellion, the unsuccessful uprising by the Métis people under Louis Riel against the Dominion of Canada. The General and his troops arrive April 2 and are ordered to go to Batoche, whereupon after three days of battle the Metis run out of ammunition and resort to firing sharp objects and small rocks from their guns, until they are forced to retreat....and later, surrender.
