1917 - Halifax, N.S. is devastated as a French munitions freighter, the Mont Blanc, carrying 2,300 tons of picric acid, 200 tons of TNT, 35 tons of high octane gasoline, and 10 tons of gun cotton, collides with the Belgium steamship Imo, at 8:45am. The Mont Blanc crew abandon ship, after failing to alert the harbour of the danger as it's cargo catches fire. The Mont Blanc explodes at 9:05 am in a blinding white flash. The blast levels downtown Halifax, kills 2,000, injures over 8,000, and leaves 10,000 homeless, causing $50 million damage.
