1964 - IX Winter Olympic games close at Innsbruck, Austria. Brothers Vic and John Emery, with Douglas Anakin and Peter Kirby, take home Canada's only Gold Medal, in Bobsledding. The quartet set a world record in their first run, and repeat their victory at the 1965 World Championship.

1948 - Fifth Winter Olympic games close at St Moritz, Switzerland. The RCAF Flyers win the Ice Hockey Gold, and Ottawa's Barbara Ann Scott takes home the Gold Medal in Figure Skating.

1758 - Governor Charles Lawrence proclaims a resolution passed by the Nova Scotia Council to organize the first Legislative Assembly of Nova Scotia; it will be the first popularly elected parliament in Canada.
