1959 - Queen Elizabeth II and President Dwight D. Eisenhower formally open the St. Lawrence Seaway with a short cruise aboard Royal Yacht Britannia after addressing the crowds in St. Lambert, Quebec. The seaway cost C$470 million, $336.2 million of which was paid by the Canadian government.

1859 - A pig owned by the Hudson Bay Company breaks into potato patch of American farmer, Lyman Cultar. He shoots and kills the pig which nearly triggers British-American war over ownership of one of the San Juan Islands which lie between Vancouver Island and Washington State in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Known as The Pig War, the pig was the only "casualty" of the war, making the conflict otherwise bloodless.

1944 - Operation Overlord (A.K.A. D-Day): 14,000 Canadian troops landed at Juno Beach, faced some of the fiercest opposition of the attack, yet they managed to advance further inland than all the other Allied forces, combined. Royal Canadian Navy minesweepers help clear the lanes in, and Royal Canadian Air Force bombers and fighters help soften up the German defenses while the Canadian Army pushes through the gap between Bayeux and Caen. Canadian casualties that day are less than expected, but still heavy - 715 wounded, 359 dead.
