1633 - Olivier Le Jeune baptized into the Roman Catholic faith. The first black person known to have lived in Canada was a native of Madagascar. As a boy he was bought at the age of 7 by the British Commander David Kirke during his invasion of New France and sold to Olivier Le Tardiff, head clerk of the French Colony. The boy was educated in a school established by the Jesuit priest, Father Le Jeune. He was later baptised as Olivier Le Jeune, taking the first name of the French clerk and the surname of the Jesuit priest.

1940 – Princess Juliana and Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands flee the Nazi invasion of the Netherlands. They arrive in Ottawa, and reside in Stornoway in Rockcliffe as a guest of the Canadian government. When her third child Margriet was born, the Governor General, Alexander Cambridge, granted Royal Assent to a special law declaring Princess Juliana's rooms at the Ottawa Civic Hospital as extraterritorial so that the infant would have exclusively Dutch citizenship.

1870 - Canada's agent in London, Sir John Rose, delivers a bank draft for £300,000 (the equivalent of $11 million) to the Hudson's Bay Company in full payment for the title to Rupert's Land. The land includes all territories drained by rivers flowing into Hudson Bay (most of today's Prairie provinces, northern Ontario, northwestern Quebec and portions of the Northwest Territories.) The HBC keeps blocks of land around its trading posts and 1/20 of the fertile belt (2.8 million hectares).

Whelan, a tailor and alleged Fenian sympathizer, was arrested and charged with the assassination of Canadian journalist and politician Thomas D'Arcy McGee, to date, the only Canadian victim of political assassination at the federal level. Decades after Whelan died on the gallows, his guilt was questioned, and some claim that he was scapegoated for the murder.

1915 - Lt.-Col. John McCrae of Guelph, Ontario composes his poem 'In Flanders Fields' in 20 minutes, while overlooking the grave of a fellow officer at Ypres, Belgium; first published in Dec. 1915 in Punch magazine, his elegy is the most famous English poem written during World War I.
