On This Day In Canadian History....

1868 -Thomas D'Arcy McGee is shot and killed by a Fenian assassin outside his Sparks Street lodging house. McGee was returning late after making a speech in Parliament; he had denounced the Fenians, a militant Irish-American group dedicated to expelling the British from Ireland by force. He is, to date, the only Canadian victim of political assassination at the federal level.

Patrick J. Whelan, a Fenian sympathizer and a Catholic, was accused, tried, convicted, and hanged for the crime. Decades later, his guilt was questioned and some believe that he was a scapegoat for a Protestant plot. Whelan was hanged with an audience of 5,000 people. This was the last public hanging of Canada.

1848 - Niagara Falls runs dry for 24 hours due to an ice jam on Lake Erie; beginning at 5 am; only time on record. The flow was stopped to the point where people where able to walk the dry riverbed and find muskets, arrowheads and tomahawks from the War of 1812.

1869 - Canadian government finally accepts terms of Rupert's Land Act of 1868; will acquire the territory once belonging to Rupert's Land which included all of Manitoba, most of Saskatchewan, southern Alberta, southern Nunavut, northern parts of Ontario and Quebec. 1746 - Sir Charles Knowles, 1st Baronet, appointed Governor of Cape Breton Island. He spent nearly two years as governor, complaining about the "confused, dirty, beastly condition" of the Fortress of Louisbourg and was largely engaged in repairing and improving the defenses of the captured French fortress.
